Arthur Gilbert, M.D., ‘57

Arthur I. Gilbert, M.D., ’57 is founder of The Hernia Institute of Florida. Since early in his career, he has been interested in the problems caused by hernias and has limited his practice to hernias. He has repaired more than 22,000 hernias. In 1995 he was president of the Florida Surgical Society. Two years later, he became the founding president of the American Hernia Society. He developed a classification of hernias widely used in the world and developed special repair techniques. Gilbert is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, has served on the South Miami Hospital Board of Governors and has been president of its medical staff. He was South Miami Hospital’s “Person of the Year” in 1995, and has been listed in “The Best Doctors in America”. Gilbert is associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
