Jamie Barkin, M.D. ’70

Jamie Barkin, M.D. ’70 is professor in the Departments of Medicine, Oncology, and Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is also a staff member at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center and the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics.

A leader in the field of gastroenterology, his contributions are recognized worldwide as attested to by his immense popularity as a lecturer and teacher. He received the University of Miami School of Medicine George F. Paff Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence. He is listed in The Best Doctors in America, a directory published by Woodward and White, and in Town and Country’s Exclusive Directory of Outstanding Medical Specialists in the US. He also received the American College of Physician’s Evergreen Award for Chapter Management (Florida). His primary research interests include evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in the management of gastrointestinal disorders and pancreatic diseases. He has authored/co-authored over 500 articles, abstracts, book chapters as well as gastrointestinal text books. Barkin serves on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals. In addition, he is an active member of a number of professional societies.

He is past-president of the American College of Gastroenterology, Council of Regional Endoscopic Societies, Florida Gastroenterologic Society and is currently the president of Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology; governor of the American College of Physicians, Florida Chapter and brigadier general in the Army Reserve.
