Only a short time into his first year at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Jeremy Freedman considers himself lucky to have already earned one of the most recognized symbols of the medical profession. The 31-year-old from Miami was recently given his very first stethoscope, courtesy of a new initiative created by the School’s Medical Alumni Association called “Stethoscopes for Students.”

Alumni Spotlight: Q & A with Dr. Devi Lalita Sridhar

Devi Sridhar is a professor and Chair in Global Public Health at Edinburgh University’s Medical School Centre for Population Health Sciences. She recently co-authored a review on overseeing global health with Chelsea Clinton, adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, which was published in December 2014 in the International Monetary Fund’s Finance & Development magazine. She also recently collaborated with UM President Julio Frenk.

President Shalala Delivers Final Commencement Address to Miller School’s ‘Best-Ever’ Class

University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala congratulated the Miller School of Medicine’s Class of 2015 in what was her final commencement address. In turn, the 196 Miller School graduates receiving their medical degrees each gave Shalala a big hug after being hooded at the ceremony at the BankUnited Center Saturday evening.

Medical Students Come Home Winners Again in Global Health Case Competition

Four Miller School of Medicine students — three from the M.D./M.B.A. program and one from the M.D./M.P.H. program — were part of a University of Miami team that recently won third place and a $1,500 prize at Emory University’s 2015 Global Health Case Competition. The UM team beat out 21 other teams, including those from Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Dartmouth.

Ice Cream Social Provides a Taste of Medical Alumni Association Support

Donors and Grateful Scholars Meet at Luncheon

For Miller School medical student Cameron Pole, the Paul J. DiMare Medical Scholarship was a major factor in his decision to come to the University of Miami. Without it, the third-year student, who is specializing in ophthalmology, would have incurred major debt. Recently, Pole was glad to have the opportunity to deliver a face-to-face “thank you” to the donor who made his Miller School education possible.

Students Host Another Successful DOCS Dean's 5K Walk/Run

The Third Annual DOCS Dean’s 5K Walk/Run attracted more than 100 participants and raised nearly $5,000. The event, organized by Miller School of Medicine students, raises awareness and funds for the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Department of Community Service (DOCS) to help buy supplies and equipment.
