Dr. Sheldon 'Shelly' Zane

On behalf of the Medical Alumni Association (MAA), we offer our deepest condolences to the family of Sheldon Zane, M.D. ’59. A member of the fourth graduating class at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Zane passed away on Friday, August 26th after succumbing to an acute respiratory illness while on vacation in Iceland. He was 82 years old.

Stethoscopes for Students” Program Welcomes Medical Students for a Second Year

Thanks to donations from our alumni and faculty, the Miller School’s Class of 2020 was surprised with a gift of one of the most enduring symbols of the medical profession. The “Stethoscopes for Students” program, run by the UM Medical Alumni Association (MAA), provided stethoscopes to all 196 incoming students as a way of welcoming them to the medical school.

The Lennar Foundation Medical Center Set to open in December

The medical center will feature cancer care from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center physician-scientists, ophthalmologic care from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute physicians, and multidisciplinary care from a variety of UHealth specialties, including men’s and women’s health, diabetes, neurology, and the UHealth Sports Performance and Wellness Institute. It will offer easy access to UHealth’s leading physicians for surrounding communities as well as UM students, faculty and staff.

Alumni Spotlight: Lisa Martinez, M.D. ’07

Medical alumna Lisa Martinez, M.D. ’07, is an assistant professor of clinical medicine and program director of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital Internal Medicine Program. After completing her medical degree at the Miller School, she did a residency at the University of Virginia before returning to UM as a physician and an educator.
