Dr. Sheldon ‘Shelly’ Zane

On behalf of the Medical Alumni Association (MAA), we offer our deepest condolences to the family of Sheldon Zane, M.D. ’59. A member of the fourth graduating class at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Zane passed away on Friday, August 26th after succumbing to an acute respiratory illness while on vacation in Iceland. He was 82 years old.

After graduating from medical school, Zane served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Medical Center and then went on to a prominent career in South Florida as an internist, specializing in rheumatology. Zane was past-president and a longtime board member of the MAA, and a frequent donor to the University, most recently donating to the “Stethoscopes for Students” program.

Zane was married for 57 years to his wife, Elaine, who died in 2015. Together, they raised four children and had seven grandchildren. They became involved with the DRI Foundation after their son, Steven, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Thanks to a legacy gift, the Zane’s are recognized as members of the DRI Heritage Society.

For years after retiring from private practice, Zane was on staff with Catholic Hospice where he tended to patients all over South Florida. Not only was he a caring and compassionate physician, but a world traveler, talented photographer, and a colorful storyteller as well.

Earlier this year, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Medical School’s first graduating class, Zane had a chance to share some of his stories with us for a video that aired at Medical Alumni Weekend. To watch the video, please click here.
