Richard Alan Smith, M.D.,’65 is a renowned neurologist who played a crucial role in in discovering one of the most promising therapeutic means of treating Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS. He is the Director of the Center for Neurologic Study in La Jolla, California, where he is continuing to pursue drug discovery and the development of treatments for incurable neurodegenerative diseases.

Michael Hughes, M.D., a fifth-year orthopaedic surgical resident, spent Hurricane Irma working a weekend-long emergency shift, hunkered down at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he treated broken bones and tended to the victims of the massive storm.

Since her retirement more than a decade ago, Janet Canterbury, Ph.D., has traveled, tried her hand as an author, enjoyed her children and grandchildren, and continued her work as a dedicated women’s rights activist.

“It is the great passion of my life, it really is,” said Canterbury. “Equality for women, and advocating for all people.”

UM Medical Alumni Association’s “Stethoscopes for Students” Program Welcomed by Medical Students

Only minutes into their formal medical school education, the Miller School of Medicine’s Class of 2021 were presented with perhaps the most recognized symbol of the medical profession.

The students were handed brand new stethoscopes, donated by alumni and faculty as a way of welcoming them to the Miller School.

As a medical student, husband, and father, Jeremy Freedman frequently finds himself short of time and money. So when the University of Miami Miller School Medical Alumni Association (MAA) surprised him with his very own stethoscope as part of its “Stethoscopes for Students” initiative, Freedman recognized it as the precious gift that it was. “It is such an incredibly warm way to start my medical career,” he said.

When George L. Sanders, M.D. ’69, came to South Florida to study at the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1965, the shadow of racism was never far away. The school’s only African-American student at the time, he was refused admittance to most of the medical societies, and he was once barred from entering an apartment complex where his classmates had arranged a study session.

Hall of Fame Award, Banquet Highlight Medical Alumni Weekend 2017

During the annual celebration of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s alumni, internationally renowned cardiologist and longtime UM faculty member Eduardo J. de Marchena, M.D. ’80, was formally inducted as the 2017 recipient of the Medical Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame Award. The honor, one of the highlights of Medical Alumni Weekend 2017, was presented March 4.
