Gerald Pinnas, M.D. ’64, Medical Alumni Association Board Member, Passes Away

The Medical Alumni Association (MAA) is saddened to report the death of longtime board member and friend Gerald Pinnas, M.D. ’64, who passed away February 10 after a long battle with cancer.

Dr. Pinnas was actively involved in the MAA and a dedicated supporter of The Medical School Class of 1964 Peter Lake Memorial Endowed Scholarship, our oldest class endowed scholarship.

Dr. Pinnas had deep roots in South Florida and at the University of Miami. His family moved to Miami in 1956, where he graduated from Miami Senior High School with honors. He earned both his BS and M.D. degrees at the University of Miami and was elected to the prestigious Iron Arrow Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society.

After completing a residency in ophthalmology at Baylor University, Dr. Pinnas embarked on a more than 30-year career as a beloved and respected eye surgeon in South Miami.

His family and friends remember him as a superb physician, and a dedicated father, son, and husband. Dr. Pinnas was also an avid wine connoisseur and collector, traveling the world with his family and his “wine friends” in pursuit of his passion.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; sister Lynne Schere; sons Nat Pinnar, M.D. and Clark Knapp; daughters Beverly Pinnas and Elise Gladstone; grandchildren Sloane Knapp, Reese Knapp, Antonia Pinnar and Ylena Gladstone; and his cherished friends.
